The Story Behind the Painting
The inspiration for Family Reunion began in the ghost town of Animas Forks, high in Colorado's San Juan Mountains. I've been visiting this quiet place since I was a kid, and its weathered buildings have always felt like they were holding onto memories of another time. Walking through the old Duncan House, I often imagined the lives that once filled its empty rooms.
Another piece of the inspiration came from reading about Colorado's last reported grizzly bear, believed to have been encountered in 1979. The story of a species once common in these mountains, reduced to a single final sighting, stayed with me. In this painting, the grizzly isn't a threat, but a quiet return from Colorado's past.
To capture the bear's expression, I studied a living grizzly at the zoo, paying particular attention to its posture and eyes. I then surrounded it with an unlikely family of teddy bears. As I painted, the bears gradually took on different personalities and backgrounds, turning a simple gathering into something that invites questions.
For me, Family Reunion is about memory, belonging, and the traces that remain long after something has disappeared. It asks whether a place ever truly forgets those who once called it home.
