After visiting New York City, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Aside from pigeons and the occasional rat, I saw very little wildlife. It made me wonder what Manhattan looked like before the streets and skyscrapers, when bears, deer, foxes, hawks, and countless other wild creatures called the island home.

Living in Colorado, we're reminded from time to time that the wild is never very far away. A bear wandering into the edge of town may be an inconvenience for some, but to me it's also a reminder that truly wild places still exist.

I imagined a young black bear exploring Manhattan as if it had arrived a few centuries too late. Perched high above the city, it nods to the famous photograph of ironworkers eating lunch atop a skyscraper. The painting became a way of bringing the wild back into a place where it once belonged, if only for a moment.
